A red alert has been issued to the aviation industry for the Bardarbunga volcano in Iceland, suggesting significant ash emissions are likely.
The Icelandic Met Office has warned that a small eruption under an ice cap has begun at Bardarbunga.
The country’s civil protection agency ordered an evacuation on Thursday after “increased seismic activity”.
The red alert is the highest warning on the country’s five-point scale.
Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, which led to severe disruptions to air travel.
