11 Tips on how to get rid of blackheads that work
Blackheads, the little swine’s…most people get at least some blackheads on their skin and they want to get rid of them fast. Blackheads appear when the pores of the skin get blocked by dirt and excess oil. This doesn’t mean, however, that you are not keeping yourself clean enough; blackheads can be caused by hormonal imbalances, by what you eat or just if you have naturally oily skin. To remove blackheads quickly and effectively you have four basic methods: preventative steps, the old fashioned squeeze (but do it the right way), store bought creams and lotions or natural, home remedies and here we give you a taste of them all for you to choose from:
1. Preventative – Check your makeup
Our first tip on how to get rid of blackheads is – check your makeup. The more you cover them up, the more of them you will get. If you use heavy foundation, concealers and thick face creams, then you are probably just making things worst, especially, if you have oily skin; so try using as few products, as you can on your face and even take a couple of days a week without makeup, to give your skin a break and a breath of fresh air.
2. Preventative – Healthy eating and drinking plenty of water
Another preventative tip on how to get rid of blackheads is – make healthy eating your own. Here we go again with the ‘healthy diet cures everything’ lectures! It’s true, though, what you eat eventually will come out in your skin and swapping burger, fries and a large full fat coke for a salad, a fruit and a glass of water really will improve the appearance of your skin.
3. Preventative – Honey face wash
Another preventative measure that can help you avoid the appearance of blackheads is washing your face with honey (it’s good for those with normal to oily skin, avoid doing it if you have sensitive skin though, as honey can also irritate your skin). Just massage your already clean, damp face with honey for a moment and then wash off. Antibacterial and antioxidant properties of honey will add beautiful healthy glow and prevent the appearance of blackheads.
4. The old fashioned remedy – Squeeze, but do it the right way!
Many would advise against this method, but let’s be honest, it’s quick, easy and it works. You have to be careful and gentle though, or you will end up with a red face and possible even scars. To make the process a little kinder on your skin, wash your face first with a mild cleanser and then place a warm, wet towel over your face for 3-5 minutes to open up the pores. Then wrap your index fingers with tissue and gently squeeze out the blackheads, one by one, but, if they don’t want to come out, don’t force them, as that’s when you can damage your skin. Never squeeze pimples with dirty hands or with your nails, never pinch or press too hard! After you’ve squeezed the unwanted blackhead out, use an astringent to cleanse your open pores, refine them and calm them down.
5. The chemical remedy
Another tip on how to get rid of blackheads is – treat the problem with store bought treatments. The best compounds to look for in store bought blackhead treatments are glycolic acid and salicylic acid. The salicylic acid breaks down the oil in your pores and dissolves the blackhead, while the glycolic acid helps to clear away dead skin. Using treatments containing these substances will clear blackheads quickly and help to stop them from coming back.
6. Natural remedy – Exfoliate with baking soda, lemon and honey
Next tip on how to get rid of blackheads is – exfoliate your skin. Mix some baking soda with a little water, add some honey and lemon juice (if you don’t have lemon, add a little witch hazel, as both lemon and witch hazel are wonderful astringents for oily skin), until you have a paste and gently scrub your face with it (do it really gently, as you have only one face!). It will gently remove existing blackheads and, if you use it regularly, it will help to keep your skin clear of any new ones too.
7. Natural remedy – White cosmetic clay mask
Using white cosmetic clay mask is another tip on how to get rid of blackheads. Dry skin needs all the oil it can get, but if you have oily or combination skin, then the excess oil on your face may be the cause of blackheads. To remove this oil, you can use a white clay mask once a week, which will soak up the excess oil and help to keep your face blackhead free. Just mix a cosmetic white clay with some distilled water, until you get a paste, apply on your skin for 5-10 minutes, then wash off. Your skin will be cleansed and glowing. You can find white cosmetic clay in most health food stores or in pharmacies.
8. Natural remedy – Egg whites
Another way to physically remove the blackheads, without squeezing, is to apply some beaten egg whites to the affected area of your face and then place some tissue paper over it. Leave the whites and paper to dry and then peel gently off. Wash your face with some warm water and check in the mirror, you should be able to see the difference.
9. Home remedy – Oatmeal and lemon
Another home remedy for getting rid of blackheads is a paste made of oatmeal and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Just mix a tablespoon of oatmeal with warm water first, to obtain a paste, then add a teaspoon of lemon juice and gently massage your face with this mix, leave it on your face for 5 minutes, then rinse. (Avoid doing this if you have sensitive skin, as lemon can also irritate your skin.)
10. Home remedy – Kiwi and almonds paste
Kiwis are rich in vitamins E and C, almonds are high in minerals and will help remove impurities. Soak almonds overnight and then, the next day crush them into paste using your blender, add a paste of one mashed kiwi and gently massage your face with this paste, concentrating on the area with blackheads, leave it sit on your skin for 5 minutes, then rinse off. This treatment will help gently exfoliate your skin, minimize pores and will add beautiful healthy glow. (Kiwis can be a little irritating to the skin, so avoid using them if you have sensitive skin).
11. Get some professional help
The best recommendation on how to get rid of blackheads is – go and see a dermatologist, as this person will really be able to help you out. Dermatologist might also recommend you other procedures/treatments, such as microdermabrasion, laser treatment or simply can prescribe you some antibiotics or Retin-A, etc.
